What is Ikat Mercerized Cotton Saree?

Mercerized cotton is a type of cotton that has undergone a treatment process involving immersion in a 16% concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The treatment causes the cellulose structure of the cotton fabric to expand and align more uniformly, resulting in significant changes to their properties. Following the ikat dyeing method and making a saree out of it is called a mercerized cotton saree.

Properties of Mercerized Cotton

  • Increased Strength & Durability: The mercerization process increases the tensile strength of the cotton fibers, making the fabric 50% more durable than cotton.
  • Improved Dye Affinity: Mercerized cotton has a greater affinity for dyes. So after dying, you can see rich and vibrant colors.
  • Enhanced Luster: The treatment offers the fabric a smooth, silky, shiny appearance.
  • Better Absorbency: Mercerized cotton is more absorbent than cotton making it more comfortable to wear.

History Of Ikkat Saree

The ikkat sarees are born in the looms of Pochampally village, Bhuvanagiri district, Hyderabad. Later weaving is spread to nearby villages Putapaka, Ghatuppal, and villages in the Bhuvanagiri and Nalgonda districts of Telangana state.

Each Ikkat Mercerized saree comes in different colors and is made by following the tie & dye method.
